Last weekend we spent two days exploring Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, 2 1/2 hours from Rock Island. This weekend we’re driving 45 minutes to ecplore the quaint Iowa river town of Muscatine. And while there are a few things to do, the main reason were going is to stay in the beautiful Merrill Hotel, a Tribute Portfolio Marriott property voted second best hotel in Iowa. With just ten hotel stays left to maintain our status for next year, Muscatine offers the perfect blend of luxury and small-town adventure to get a night closer. Pine Creek Grist Mill & Melpine Schoolhouse

Situated in Wildcat Den State Park, Pine Creek Grist Mill, built in 1848, is located 10 miles from Muscatine. I suggest you stop there first. It’s one of the oldest working mills west of the Mississippi. Visitors can explore the mill’s fascinating history and see it in action as it continues to grind grain, just as it did over 170 years ago. Nearby, the one-room Melpine Schoolhouse, now a museum, is filled with rural school memorabilia, offering a glimpse into the past. As one of the best attractions in Muscatine, it’s a perfect destination for history enthusiasts and families alike.

Hiking at Wildcat Den State Park: Popular Sights

Hiking at Wildcat Den State Park is an adventure filled with scenic beauty and historical landmarks. The park offers several trails that wind through rugged terrain, featuring dramatic cliffs, rock formations, and dense woodlands. It’s unlike any other landscape I’ve hiked in the Quad Cities. Popular sights along the way include Steamboat Rock and the towering Devil’s Punch Bowl, both offering impressive views and perfect spots for nature lovers and photographers.

Ardon Creek Vineyard & Winery

Ardon Creek Vineyard & Winery is a small, family-owned winery with two acres of Concord grapes. Most of its grapes are sourced from the Erie Wine Region in New York. They’ve also won some awards at my favorite wine competition, the Finger Lakes Wine Region. During our visit, we sat on the back porch, sipping a bottle of semi-sweet Holiday White with grapefruit and green apple notes while enjoying the rolling hills of golden corn waiting to be harvested.

The winery is located on a 164-year-old family farm with deep Irish roots, Ardon Creek Vineyard & Winery spans 2.1 acres and cultivates five varieties of grapes. From bold reds like Noiret and Chancellor to crisp whites like Edelweiss and LaCrosse, their wines are produced, bottled, and enjoyed on-site. Ardon Creek is one of the best attractions in Muscatine, but unfortunately, it is contemplating closing its doors. I hope it’s still here when we return because it’s a must-stop for those seeking an authentic local wine experience.

Muscatine Arboretum

Discover the beauty of the Muscatine Arboretum, a “living tree museum” located in Discovery Park. With 13 acres of native and ornamental plants, the Arboretum offers paved walking trails, perfect for a relaxing stroll. The Veterans Memorial Area provides a peaceful space for reflection, while the picturesque gazebo is an ideal spot for picnics. Don’t miss the medieval-style brick labyrinth, a calming walk that adds a unique touch to the park.

Visiting the Mark Twain Viewpoint

Perched above the Mississippi River, I found the Mark Twain Viewpoint to offers partially obstructed views of the river that once inspired the famous author. It’s known for Twain’s remark about Muscatine having the “most beautiful sunsets,” and as I stood there, I could see why. The sweeping panorama and the colors of the sky at dusk were stunning. This spot was the perfect place to unwind after exploring Muscatine, offering both peace and beauty. I made sure to bring my camera to capture the sunset and reflect on the view that once captivated one of America’s greatest writers. Be aware the road up to the overlook is poorly maintained slab and not asphalt.

Bayer Butterfly Garden

The Bayer Butterfly Garden is a hidden gem for nature lovers. This one-acre garden, nestled within a 155-acre prairie, is home to vibrant wildflowers that bloom throughout the year, attracting butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. As you walk through the garden, you can relax by the pond, listening to the soothing sound of waterfalls while watching koi swim among the water lilies. Whether you’re a casual observer or a photography enthusiast, this garden offers tranquility and natural beauty at every turn.

Riverside Park

Riverside Park is the perfect spot for outdoor fun along the Mississippi River in Muscatine.. Cool off at the Mississippi Mist Fountain, an interactive splash pad with water jets shooting 30 feet into the air (during warmer weather).. With its steamboat-themed design, this fountain is a family favorite, especially on hot summer days. While you’re there, don’t miss the giant watermelon statue—a quirky photo opportunity. If you’re looking for more activity, shoot some hoops or explore the Running River Bike & Pedestrian Trail System, which offers scenic river views.

In the evening, Riverside Park offers the best views of the Norbert F. Beckey Bridge, beautifully illuminated with colorful LED lights. It’s the perfect way to wrap up a day by the river.

Contrary Brewing Co

For a more laid-back experience, stop by Contrary Brewing Co. Located at 101 W Mississippi Dr, this local favorite offers a wide selection of craft beers brewed right in Muscatine, making it one of the best attractions in Muscatine. The cozy taproom is very popular, but not one of Steven’s favorite breweries.

Big Cat’s Cafe

Big Cat’s Cafe in Muscatine, Iowa, is owned by Duane “Big Cat” Williams. He opened the cafe after deciding to pursue his lifelong dream of running a restaurant. Williams, originally from New Jersey, has a background in community service, having worked for over 20 years as a corrections officer. The cafe is a family-operated business, with contributions from his wife, Christy, and their daughters.

Dwayne has owned Big Cat’s Cafe for the last four years. It’s a great place for a quick bite or a relaxed cafe exper serves breakfast and lunch. The cafe is located in a historic building on the main drag at 101 W Mississippi Dr. Big Cat’s Cafe offers a variety of delicious café treats, from freshly brewed coffee to sandwiches and pastries. Whether you’re stopping in for breakfast or lunch, this café is a welcoming spot to recharge during your visit.

Where We Stayed: The Merrill Hotel, Muscatine, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel

The Merrill Hotel, recently voted the second-best hotel in Iowa, has a lot going for it, but I didn’t quite see it living up to that accolade. It’s a beautiful hotel, with its greatest feature being the proximity to the Mississippi River, just steps away. The decor is lovely, but some of the higher-end amenities I expect were missing—there’s no spa, no valet parking, and no members club with hot food and alcohol.

What it does have is a beautiful lobby, a functional gym, a lap pool, and a cozy outdoor space with a fire pit. However, we stayed during a weekend with two weddings, and the noise lasted past midnight. We spoke with Taylor, the front desk supervisor, who apologized for not placing us further from the 6th-floor venue. Also, one of the servers in the restaurant, Maxwell’s on the River, was so rude that even my usually laid-back husband felt compelled to report her.

While we hoped for an upgrade to the Presidential Suite, we were given a river-view room instead. The room itself was nice, but the bathroom was tiny, and the windows were so dirty with spider webs that they almost blocked the view. One highlight was the seating area near the elevators on each floor, which offered a peaceful spot when I woke up early.

The hotel features 122 guest rooms and suites, many with river views, 13,000 square feet of meeting space, an indoor pool, fitness center, and a restaurant and lounge. Valet parking, concierge services, free Wi-Fi, and in-room refrigerators are also offered. Its location in downtown Muscatine makes exploring the local restaurants and attractions convenient.

Absolutely. Muscatine’s quirky attractions and charming scenery make it well worth the short trip. From posing with the world’s largest watermelon to relaxing at The Merrill Hotel, you’ll discover some of the best attractions in Muscatine during your visit. I was joke half joking about being upgraded to the Presidential Suite. It has happened several times in the past. Next time we visit, we make sure there are no weddings or large events. If you’re looking for a quick, easy escape with both adventure and comfort, Muscatine is the perfect choice.
