At Tycoga Winery & Distillery, it’s more than just about the drinks; their pizza is pretty good, too. Thirty minutes from our door to theirs, we stepped into a place buzzing with life. Despite the crowd, the manager spotted us right away, treating us like VIPs and ushering us to the bar. That warm welcome set the stage for an experience we won’t forget, savoring standout pizza and wine in the heart of Iowa.

A Seat at the Bar: Tycoga Winery’s Culinary Wine Scene

Tycoga Winery & Distillery isn’t just about drinks; they make an amazing pizza too. We drove for about 30 minutes to get there, looking forward to trying their famous wine and grabbing some food. When we arrived, the place was packed with people everywhere. Despite the crowd, the manager spotted us and invited us over to the bar. That’s how we started our adventure into the world of great pizza and wine at Tycoga, right in the middle of Iowa.

Just the Winery Facts

Nine years ago, a group of novice wine enthusiasts started the winery and learned the ropes as they built it. Surrounded by their vineyard, a beautiful landscape, breathtaking waterfalls, and Serenity Pond, the winery boasts its best-selling (and most award-winning) wine, a sweet one made with Concord grapes. Recently, it earned honors at the prestigious Finger Lakes International Wine Competition—a place Steven and I visited a few years ago. However, neither of us enjoys that sweet of a wine, so we were given a semi-sweet and semi-dry wine to start.

The owners named TYCOGA after their three children, Tyler, Courtney, and Gabe, using the first two letters of each of their names.

The family-owned business began in 2010 with only 50 plants. TYCOGA Winery & Distillery was established in April 2013. Originally intending to sell grapes, the family discovered that the grapes they grew could produce some delicious wine. They now cultivate more than 20 grape varieties on 26 acres of land. In addition, the distillery opened recently in 2021.

The Wine Offerings

The winery offers an impressive array of wines, ranging from dry to semi-sweet and very sweet. Alongside the wines, TYCOGA Winery & Distillery serves cocktails and slushes made with their wine, Vodka, Whiskey, and Gin—all of which were equally delicious.

The Winery and Patio

The interior of the winery is stunning, adorned with dark woods and stone. Dotted with cozy seating areas and a fireplace, the interior exudes an inviting ambiance. We opted for seats at the bar, providing a great view of the winery’s activities.

Alternatively, you can savor your wine on the back patio within one of the heated plastic bubbles. These bubbles provide a comfortable space to socialize with friends, like the group of ladies celebrating their girl’s birthday. It’s a great place to enjoy a stunning view of the vineyards and the shifting colors of the sky before the sun sets.
