We went to St. Kilda Collective for brunch. We sat in the window watching the street traffic and all the people walking by. St. Kilda Collective is a unique blend of cafe, restaurant, and bar. It offers excellent coffee, cocktails and light fare. My husband and I have ordered the grilled chicken bao buns in a chili soy glaze, on steamed bao buns, with scallions, cilantro, jalapeños, sesame seeds, cashews, and sriracha aioli. The buns were fluffy and the chicken was delicious. I think 36 hours in Des Moines is a great introduction to the cafes and restaurants– so go and enjoy.

I love unique cafes and no weekend in Des Moines is complete without stopping by West End Architectural Salvage Coffee Shop. This cafe combines a cozy coffee shop with an architectural salvage warehouse, where you can browse one-of-a-kind furniture, vintage doors, stained glass windows, and other fascinating pieces. Grab a coffee and explore the four-story warehouse full of reclaimed treasures. It’s the perfect blend of caffeine and creativity who love the show of the same name on HGTV.

That seems to be a theme in the area. The wine is just okay, so go for the views, the setting, or the live music—not the wine itself.

Where We Stayed

Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel

We stayed at the Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel. Honestly, we only booked it because it has a nice lounge. Unfortunately, we did not call in advance because the lounge is closed until Sunday, when we leave to go back home.

Final Thoughts

I think 36 hours in Des Moines is just the right amount of time to see the highlights without rushing. Take the Capitol tour—it’s a must. Then slow down and enjoy the gardens, river trail, and coffee shops. The city feels most alive in spring and fall. We visited once in the winter, and I don’t recommend that. Cold weather dulls much of what makes Des Moines worth visiting.
