Discovering Des Moines: A Road Trip Adventure

We made an unexpected yet delightful pitstop in Des Moines during our road trip from Kansas to Illinois. Moreover, it’s a city we had never explored before. However, little did we know that this charming city would hold a culinary gem that would leave a lasting impression on us. We’re excited to share our experience at Scenic Route Bakery, where warm hospitality and delectable treats meet.

Route 66 road trip

Scenic Route Bakery: A Rustic Oasis on Route 66

Located in the heart of the East Village in Des Moines, Iowa, along the historic Route 66, Scenic Route Bakery is a delightful find for travelers and locals alike. As you approach the bakery, you’ll notice a unique blend of rural charm and industrial aesthetics. A massive windmill, metal stars, and scenic depictions of Iowa’s highways and byways adorn the interior walls, setting the stage for a memorable visit.

The Ambiance: An Abundance of Light and Quirkiness

However, what truly sets Scenic Route Bakery apart is its ambiance. In addition, the large, floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light. Thus providing a perfect opportunity for people-watching along Route 66. The interior is a harmonious mix of rustic and industrial elements, with open ductwork, industrial canned lighting, rough-honed poured concrete floors, reclaimed wood, and unfinished concrete ceilings. Your eyes will be drawn both upwards and downwards, exploring the expansive space.

Under the wind turbine’s rotating blades, you’ll find a cozy seating arrangement with big, comfy leather sofas, perfect for sinking into with a delicious pastry and a cup of coffee. The bakery’s shelves are adorned with porcelain hens and turkeys, adding a touch of farm-style charm. Quirky farm tools, washboards, and baskets hang on the walls between the windows, adding character to the space. In good weather, you can also enjoy your treats on the front and side patio, allowing you to soak in the vibrant atmosphere of passersby.

The Culinary Delights: A Feast for All Senses

Scenic Route Bakery offers an array of culinary delights that will satisfy any craving. The cafe’s selection of pastries, including croissants and cookies, is sure to tempt those with a sweet tooth. The aroma of freshly baked goods wafts through the air, enticing you to indulge in one (or more) of their delectable treats.

For those looking for something more substantial, the bakery also boasts a savory lunch menu featuring sandwiches, soups, and salads. We enjoyed savoring a toffee cookie, a cherry pinwheel Danish, and a turkey panini during our visit. Each bite was a burst of flavor, and the quality of the ingredients was undeniable.

Many patrons take advantage of the free Wi-Fi and convenient power outlets, making it an ideal stop for work or leisure.

In conclusion, our visit to Scenic Route Bakery was a delightful surprise during our road trip adventure. The warm atmosphere, delicious offerings, and unique ambiance made it a memorable experience. If you find yourself on the scenic Route 66, take a detour to Scenic Route Bakery – you won’t be disappointed. It’s a place where the journey itself becomes as enjoyable as the destination.
