5 of My Favorite Places to Work Out
I am a military spouse, and one thing is always true—just when you get comfortable, it’s time to go. We’ve been here for more than two years now, and a routine has emerged. I know where to eat, exercise, and enjoy life. During this time, I’ve learned to appreciate the hills, rivers, and wildflowers of Kansas. Here are five of my favorite places to work out in Manhattan.
Linear Bike & Walking Trails
One of my favorite ways to work out in Manhattan is hiking the Linear Trail. This popular walking and biking path spans roughly 9 miles of paved and crushed limestone. The trail runs from Anneberg Park to Northeast Community Park, winding alongside Big Blue River, Kansas River, and Wildcat Creek. It offers shade from the Kansas sun and a peaceful view of local plants and wildlife. This summer, there was even an alligator sighting. Imagine that—in the heartland of Kansas!
Konza Prairie Nature Trail Loop
Working Out in Manhattan
You don’t need a gym to stay active here. The Konza Prairie Nature Trail Loop is a 2.7-mile trail just outside of town. It’s moderately trafficked and popular for hiking, walking, and trail running, especially from April to June. I recommend hiking with a buddy. Local hiking groups meet up most weekends. If you’re looking for a trail partner, email me at stacey@duffelbagspouse.
Anneberg Park
I visit Anneberg Park often. It has a scenic walking path that winds nearly 2 miles through open space and wooded areas. The trail includes paved sections, crushed stone, and packed dirt. The park also features group sports fields, a covered pavilion with BBQs, and a large fishing pond.
Wildcat Fitness & Fun
I work out at Wildcat Fitness Center almost every day. It’s a small, family-owned gym with a 9-hole golf course and driving range inside Anneberg Park. It’s not fancy, but it feels welcoming. I never feel judged or uncomfortable.
Everyone eventually knows your face. You see the same people depending on the time of day you go. And the staff will absolutely check in if they haven’t seen you for a while.
The gym also includes a miniature golf course and batting cages. Family-friendly prices and a second 24-hour location on the east side make it even more accessible.
Aggieville
Aggieville makes the list because it’s more than a college hangout. It’s one of the oldest shopping districts in Kansas and home to over 100 bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and businesses—including a yoga studio and bookstore. That’s a workout for the mind, body, and soul.
It’s especially lively on weekends thanks to Kansas State University students. The district also hosts parades, food festivals, and seasonal events throughout the year. For event info and business listings, visit Aggieville.org.
Planet Beach Spray & Spa
When someone first recommended Planet Beach, I laughed. Do I look like I need a tanning booth? But this place is much more—and that’s why it belongs in my top five.
The staff is welcoming. I’ve spent hours there pampering myself with hot yoga, saunas, and massage chairs. They offer water-powered massages, facials, scented oxygen, and red light therapy, which is my personal favorite. And yes, there’s tanning too.
It’s open now with reservations required. Visit planetbeach.com or call (785) 776-8267 to book an appointment. Tell them Stacey sent you.
