I always thought summer or fall was the best time to visit Portofino because everything was open and the weather was nice. But that’s not the only way to see this city. I didn’t go there to buy fancy stuff or see famous people. I just wanted to chill by the harbor. Luckily, even off-peak places are open for coffee or a stroll. So don’t wait for the peak seasons. Travel off-peak to save money and enjoy a more relaxed holiday.

When to Visit

Going when everyone else does means everything’s more expensive, crowded, and too hot. That makes me anxious and likely to regret the trip. I’m not into big crowds or wasting my time and money, but I really wanted to check out Portofino. So, I went in the spring instead. It turns out late March is perfect. All you need is something light to wear. The weather’s great for taking long walks, checking out the sights, or just sitting by the water with a coffee. Avoid the Daytrippers

A lot of people visit Portofino for a few hours and then leave. But they’re missing out. Portofino can be budget-friendly, especially in the late afternoon and early evening. So, if you really want to go during the busy season, a good tip is to find a cheaper place to stay in a nearby town. Then, head over to Portofino late in the day after most of the day visitors have gone. It’s much more relaxed, and the whole place feels different. Plus, you get to see all sorts of people.

And don’t worry; you’ll still be able to take those great Instagram photos you’re looking for.

While Portofino itself tends to be on the higher end in terms of accommodation costs, nearby towns like Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo offer more budget-friendly options for overnight stays. You can find decent hotels. Also, guesthouses, hostels, and apartments can provide affordable accommodation options. These places can be 1/4th of what you’d pay in Portofino. They allow you to enjoy the Italian Riviera’s beauty and easily access Portofino during the day.

As the ferry moves through the blue waters, you get a panoramic view of the coastline, with the sun casting a golden glow over the sea. The journey is enjoyable on its own. When you arrive, San Fruttuoso greets you with charming streets, cozy cafes, and lively markets. You can also swim, hike, visit the Abbazia di San Fruttuoso, or explore the ruins of the Torre Doria.
