I’ve been watching travel videos about moving abroad for years. I’ve lived overseas a few times, and even I feel like most videos are more like commercials than reality. They sell a dream of Southeast Asia—cheap rent, easy living, endless freedom—but leave out the parts that actually matter. Yes, it can be cheaper than America. But only if your lifestyle matches the local way of living. For some, the truth is the opposite: higher bills, constant surprises, and a daily life nothing like the influencer hype they came for.

The Illusion of Cheap Living
Influencers often show only the polished moments. Golden beaches framed by drone shots. Stylish cafes with perfect lighting. Rooftop pools against city skylines. They rarely show the cost—or what they gave up to be there.
One of the stories was about a woman who moved to Thailand after hearing it was cheap. And it can be—if you eat local food, shop at markets, and adjust your habits. She didn’t. She ate in Western cafes, bought imported groceries, and shopped in malls instead of night markets. Her rent, transport, and food costs soon matched—or exceeded—her U.S. expenses.
The Reality Behind the Scenes
She has been in Thailand for several months on a one-year lease. She doesn’t regret the move, but she admits influencers left out details that would have changed her expectations.
Here’s what she discovered:
- Preparation takes time – Downsizing, paperwork, and planning can take a year.
- Pet relocation is complicated – Condo restrictions and bad vet advice kept her from bringing her cat.
- The right city matters – Bangkok felt overwhelming as a single woman; Chiang Mai suited her lifestyle better.
- Hidden costs add up – Grab rides, ATM fees, and foreign exchange charges drain savings.
- Accommodation can disappoint – A “charming” hotel booked online was run-down and unsettling in person.
- Banking and phone services can fail you – Chase Bank and T-Mobile caused major issues abroad.
- Overly edited videos are suspect – Highly curated content smooths over reality; take it with caution.
- Foreigners often pay more – Rent, attractions, and transport can cost extra for non-locals.
Red Flags in Influencer Content
Highlight reels without daily life
If you never see grocery runs, laundry, or commutes, you’re not seeing the full picture.
Price comparisons with no examples
“It’s cheaper here” is meaningless without exact numbers for rent, utilities, and food.
No mention of errands or chores
Real life abroad still includes buying basics, cleaning, and paying bills.
No discussion of cultural adjustment
If they skip customs, language, or bureaucracy, you’re not getting the hard parts.
Edited-out inconveniences
Traffic, bad weather, and delays exist everywhere. If you never see them, they’re being cut out.
Protecting Yourself from the Hype
- Ask for real numbers—rent, food, transport, utilities.
- Cross-check with multiple, independent sources.
- Compare their lifestyle to the one you actually want.
- Check when the content was filmed; prices change quickly.
- Test daily life in a city before signing a long lease.
The Bottom Line
Inspiration is not the same as information. For a long time, I assumed no one wanted to hear about the bad parts of travel. I believed hotels, travel agencies, and tourism boards wouldn’t support content that wasn’t all smiles. But I was wrong. When done honestly, even the hard truths connect with people.
The reality is simple: our habits are different, and our costs are different. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to travel. It’s a big compliment when someone duplicates my itineraries, but it’s never expected. Yeah, it validates my awesomeness. But, I’m only offering ideas, not instructions. And moving abroad is far too big of a decision to base on someone else’s edited version of life.
Plan carefully. Go see it for yourself. Then, build a version of the dream that feels real for you.
