Budget-friendly SpaceA Travel Traveling with a family can be expensive, especially internationally. But I’ve found a fantastic solution: Budget-friendly SpaceA travel. As a military family member, I’ve flown from Germany to the United States without spending a dollar on flights. Instead of searching online or visiting local travel agencies, I visit the Air Mobility Command Travel Site to check for available SpaceA flights. This travel option is a privilege for service members and their dependents. Budget travelers can take advantage of Budget-friendly SpaceA travel for affordable family vacations. SpaceA travel is the OG of slow travel. It requires flexibility and patience and has become the subject of some of my favorite travel stories. Unique SpaceA Experiences One summer, I took my kids from Germany to the States for a summer visit. We flew out on a Friday and I was back in Germany by Sunday afternoon, having spent nothing on flights. It was an incredible experience for the whole family and became one of our favorite summer vacations. They had fun in the States and lived alone in Europe. I flew back to pick them up and I returned to Germany together at the end of the summer. I couldn’t have done that without SpaceA. SpaceA to a Wedding? Steven and I flew from Germany to St. Louis on another trip for a friend’s wedding. Despite doubts about making it on time, we managed to fly there and back, spending only money on a rental car and hotel stay. We discovered a cost-effective way to turn our vacations into an adventure with SpaceA travel. From that day forward, I was affectionately known as the SpaceA Queen. Ramstein to Spangdahlem Flexibility is crucial with SpaceA travel. I often flew out of Ramstein Air Base in Germany. However, one time, I kept getting bumped from flights at Ramstein. Unfortunately, passenger availability is estimated until the flight lands, and every one of those planes has zero seats. I learned of a flight out of Spangdahlem, an hour away, leaving in a few hours. I didn’t say anything to anyone in the terminal, grabbed Malik and Kamren, and quietly left the terminal. Then I drove to Spangdahlem like a bat out of hell. I got the last three seats on the flight to Norfolk–exactly where I wanted to go. When I say I drove, I took advantage of the Autobahn– I was flying! After we had been confirmed, I saw everyone from the Ramstein Terminal pop up. All of them were surprised I got there so fast. But that’s exactly what I mean by being flexible. A new flight can pop up anytime, and you must be ready to roll out. Hammock My son had a unique experience flying in a hammock between cargo containers. I brought a blow-up mattress, and we had a picnic, watching movies on my laptop while lying on the bed for the entire flight. Initially hesitant, my kids soon preferred SpaceA flights over commercial ones. They loved the freedom to move around and lie down. On one memorable flight, we flew backward—the seats faced the opposite direction of travel, adding to the adventure. Budget-friendly SpaceA Travel While waiting at a terminal, I watched a family of seven trying to get on a flight. They juggled luggage and children, their faces a mix of excitement and uncertainty. SpaceA was probably the only cost-effective way for them to travel recreationally. Commercial flights for a family of that size would be prohibitively expensive, but SpaceA makes it possible. This military benefit allows eligible families to fly on military aircraft when space is available, significantly reducing travel costs. I felt bad for them because they eventually split up the family. Three kids went with Dad to a higher flight category, and the rest went with Mom to a lower one. SpaceA (available) travel is one of those military perks that senior spouses go to when they have more time than money, which is 99% of the time. But because we aren’t service members, our category is lower. We could be signed in and waiting, and a higher category could arrive and shake up everything. SpaceA travel allows eligible passengers to fill unused DoD-owned or controlled aircraft seats. These flights are primarily operated by the Air Force’s Air Mobility Command (AMC). While duty passengers and cargo have priority, eligible passengers can travel on these flights for free or at a minimal cost. There were several days I took our packed suitcases back home because we couldn’t get on a flight. That’s why you must be flexible. You aren’t guaranteed one back even if you get a flight out. Flight schedules are subject to change, and seat availability is not guaranteed. And if a coffin is on board, that flight is not available for passengers out of respect. You’ll never know that until it lands. Having a backup plan and remaining patient throughout the process is essential. While many SpaceA flights are free, certain flights may charge nominal fees. For instance, Patriot Express flights may charge head tax and inspection fees typically paid in cash. We’ve had to do that twice out of BWI. it was about $20. Travelers should also budget for potential expenses like hotel stays and meals during waits. Major Hubs in the United States Several major hubs in the United States offer frequent SpaceA flights: Baltimore/Washington International (BWI): A popular hub with many scheduled flights, attracting flyers from up and down the East Coast. Dover Air Force Base (Delaware) McGuire Air Force Base (New Jersey) Andrews Air Force Base (Maryland) Norfolk Naval Station (Virginia) Charlotte Douglas International Airport (North Carolina) Registering for as many hubs as possible increases your chances of finding a flight. However, using SpaceA requires a great deal of flexibility. Families must be prepared for sudden changes, as flight availability can be unpredictable. Despite these challenges, SpaceA opens up travel opportunities that many military families might otherwise never experience. It enables them to visit loved ones, explore new destinations, and create lasting memories without the financial burden that typically accompanies air travel. For this family of seven, and many others like them, SpaceA represents more than just a flight; it is a gateway to adventure and connection. SpaceA flights can be on various aircraft, from large cargo planes like the C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster to smaller aircraft. The seating can range from fold-down jump seats to standard airline seats bolted to the floor. Conditions may be minimalist, with bathrooms offering only the bare necessities. However, the unique experiences and cost savings make it worthwhile. Visit the Air Mobility Command Travel Site for more information about SpaceA travel, including how to register and find flights.
