Sometimes a hotel becomes part of the destination instead of simply a place to sleep. That happened during our stay at The Merrill Hotel in Muscatine, Iowa. We booked the stay using Marriott Bonvoy points during the spring promotion I mentioned earlier, and the property surprised us from the moment we arrived. Between the Mississippi River views, rooftop terraces, polished interiors, comfortable lounge spaces, and walkable downtown location, the hotel brought a level of style and atmosphere I honestly did not expect in a small Midwest river town.

Why We Chose The Merrill Hotel
The Merrill Hotel & Conference Center sits directly along the Mississippi River in downtown Muscatine. The hotel belongs to Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio collection, which usually means the property has more personality and local character than a standard chain hotel.
We also chose The Merrill because it sits only about 45 minutes from home. Sometimes the best weekend getaways do not require flights or complicated planning. We wanted a short break that still felt different from everyday life, and the riverfront location gave us exactly that.
Lately, we have taken more short Midwest road trips instead of waiting for one large vacation. Marriott’s spring Bonvoy promotion gave us another reason to use points while earning extra Elite Night Credits and bonus points along the way. Instead of rushing through Muscatine, we decided to stay overnight and actually spend time exploring the riverfront and downtown area.

The Lobby
The Merrill’s lobby combines riverfront elegance with modern residential design. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light while warm walnut-toned wood, marble fireplaces, cream walls, and soft gold accents keep everything polished without looking overly formal.
The lobby seating areas resemble a luxury condo lounge more than a traditional hotel lobby. Velvet sofas, leather chairs, layered rugs, and glass tables create comfortable spaces to sit with coffee or watch the riverfront through the tall windows. Large striped drapes frame the glass while oversized mirrors reflect light across the room.
One of the most striking design details hangs overhead. A sculptural chandelier suspends hundreds of floating glass droplets from the ceiling, almost like bubbles rising from the Mississippi River outside. The abstract artwork, soft lighting, and thoughtful furniture placement make the entire space look intentional instead of generic.
That design focus makes sense once you learn about the Merrill family’s connection to HNI Corporation, formerly HON Industries, one of the country’s largest office furniture manufacturers headquartered in Muscatine. The influence appears throughout the hotel in the layout, furnishings, and attention to comfort.

The Rooms and Suites
The guest rooms continue the same clean, modern style found downstairs. Medium walnut wood tones, soft creams, charcoal accents, and black metal details create a calm, upscale atmosphere without becoming cold or trendy.
Several suites include large living areas with fireplaces, oversized windows, and direct Mississippi River views. Some rooms feature dramatic four-poster beds while others include separate sitting areas that resemble modern apartments more than standard hotel rooms.
The bathrooms stand out as well. Large soaking tubs, walk-in rain showers, marble counters, bright lighting, and warm wood walls create a spa-like atmosphere that works especially well after a long day exploring downtown Muscatine. And I love that the water is softer than the water at home.
Even the fifth-floor club lounge keeps the same polished design style. White subway tile, floating wood shelves, stainless refrigerators, and bright countertops create a clean space for complimentary drinks and snacks while overlooking the riverfront below.

Maxwell’s On The River
There is a beautiful restaurant inside The Merrill Hotel & Conference Center called Maxwell’s On The River overlooking the Mississippi River. Large windows line the dining room while trains and barges pass slowly outside throughout the day. The restaurant carries the same elegant style as the rest of the hotel with striped curtains, dark wood finishes, and soft lighting that made the space feel warm instead of overly formal.
Breakfast became one of my favorite parts of the stay. Morning light filled the restaurant while people lingered over coffee beside the windows. Unlike many larger hotels, the dining room never turned loud or chaotic during breakfast hours. Everything moved at a slower pace, which matched the relaxed atmosphere throughout the property.
I also appreciated how naturally the restaurant connected with the rest of the hotel. Guests moved between the lobby fireplace, rooftop terrace, coffee bar, and restaurant without the spaces ever seeming disconnected from one another.

Rooftop Views Along the Mississippi
The rooftop terraces may be the best feature in the entire hotel. Comfortable outdoor seating overlooks the Mississippi River, riverfront park, railroad tracks, and downtown Muscatine below.
From above, you can watch freight trains move slowly along the river while barges pass through the water in the distance. The combination of industry, river traffic, bridges, and open sky gives Muscatine a strong sense of place that many towns lose over time.
At sunset, the river reflects soft gold and blue light across the horizon. The rooftop becomes one of those spaces where people naturally slow down and stay longer than they planned.

The Fifth-Floor Club Lounge
The fifth-floor club lounge added another layer of comfort to the stay. Complimentary drinks, snacks, fruit, and small breakfast items made it easy to stop for a quick break without leaving the floor.
I especially liked how bright and clean the space looked. White subway tile walls, floating wood shelves, stainless refrigerators, and modern counters kept the lounge simple and functional without losing the hotel’s overall design style.
Sometimes small details shape a hotel experience more than grand amenities. Sitting quietly with snacks while looking out over the riverfront ended up becoming one of my favorite moments during the stay.
Facilities and Amenities
The hotel includes an indoor pool, large fitness center, event spaces, riverfront terraces, valet parking, and EV charging stations. The property feels upscale without becoming intimidating. Staff moved quickly, and the common spaces remained clean throughout the stay.
Location matters here too. The hotel sits directly beside downtown Muscatine, making it easy to explore the riverfront, local cafes, murals, and historic buildings on foot. I also wrote a separate guide featuring some of our favorite things to do around town, including public art, coffee shops, and riverfront walking paths: Muscatine Walking Tour

Exploring Downtown Muscatine
One thing I appreciated most about staying overnight was having time to explore Muscatine slowly instead of treating it like a quick stop. We walked directly from The Merrill into Riverside Park and along the riverfront trail where barges moved steadily through the Mississippi. We stopped beside the Clammer Statue, passed the World’s Largest Watermelon sculpture, and wandered through downtown streets lined with local businesses, cafes, murals, and historic brick buildings.
We also spent time inside the National Pearl Button Museum learning how Muscatine once produced one-third of the world’s pearl buttons. Later, we stopped for coffee at Coffee Belt, browsed inside The Merrill Soap Company, and sat near the river watching trains move along the tracks below the hotel.

Why The Merrill Stands Out
Many Midwest hotels focus only on convenience. The Merrill Hotel pays attention to atmosphere, design, comfort, and place. The river remains visible throughout the property while the rooftop overlooks the same Mississippi River that shaped Muscatine’s history, economy, and identity for generations.
The hotel does not feel disconnected from the town around it. Railroad tracks still run beside the river below the rooftop terraces. Barges move slowly through the water outside the restaurant windows. Local artwork, river-inspired design details, and the connection to Muscatine’s furniture industry all tie the property directly to the city itself.
That connection becomes even clearer once you learn about the Merrill family’s ties to HNI Corporation, formerly HON Industries, one of Muscatine’s largest employers and one of the country’s biggest office furniture manufacturers. The hotel reflects the city’s long history of manufacturing, river commerce, craftsmanship, and local pride instead of hiding it behind generic luxury design.
Even the location reinforces that connection. The Merrill sits directly beside downtown Muscatine, the riverfront parks, local businesses, murals, coffee shops, and historic streets that make the city interesting in the first place. Once we parked the car, the entire weekend naturally flowed between the hotel and the town around it.
That balance makes The Merrill memorable because the hotel feels like an extension of Muscatine itself instead of a hotel that could exist anywhere. Check out the rates for the Merrill Hotel in Muscatine here.
