Nestled in the heart of Chiang Mai’s Old Town, Fern Forest is a charming, family-owned cafe that exudes homestyle warmth and a touch of nostalgia. This two-story cafe, often hailed as one of the prettiest in the city, has been serving up delectable homemade pastries and brunch items for over two decades. But Fern Forest is more than just a cafe; it’s a piece of history, a labor of love, and a testament to the enduring charm of traditional family recipes.

Homestyle Recipes: A Grandmother’s Legacy

Fern Forest’s story begins with a house that belonged to the daughter’s grandmother. The cafe’s two-story structure oozes character, with a rich history that’s palpable as soon as you step inside. As you enter, you’ll notice the attention to detail in every corner. The decor, a tasteful mix of blue and white, evokes a sense of timelessness.

A Feast for the Eyes

The interior of Fern Forest is a visual treat. The blue and white color scheme, reminiscent of classic porcelain, sets the stage for a serene and inviting atmosphere. Tantan chairs, in shades of brown and white, sport traditional blue and white patterns, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a page from a storybook. Glass tops, supported by wooden and metal pedestals, adorn each table, adding a touch of elegance.

Blue and white plates and pictures of classic vases adorn the cafe’s walls, immersing you in its timeless ambiance. The atmosphere felt homey and intimate. It was almost too intimate because the tables were a bit close to accommodate more guests.

Windows All Around

Fern Forest doesn’t just invite you to enjoy its decor; it also offers picturesque views of the garden through three walls of floor-to-ceiling accordion door windows. The natural light floods the interior, creating a bright and inviting space. The second floor was not open when I visited.

However, guests are politely requested to remove their shoes when the second floor opens, adding to the cozy atmosphere. Taking off shoes in Asia is common when visiting someone’s home and certain businesses. It’s a tradition I appreciate and have adopted in my own home, too.

Nature Meets Elegance

Both the indoor and outdoor seating areas at Fern Forest are true oases. Additionally, the white marble tile flooring, adorned with grey, black, and beige streaks, beautifully complements the natural outdoor setting. They exude French Bistro style that’s comfortable enough for brunch and extended chats but not ideal for lingering all day.

Outside, a canopy of mature trees shades the outside seating area. White bamboo umbrellas also complement it. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the tranquil surroundings. While I often prefer sitting outside, I forgot to pack my insect repellant. So, I opted for an air-conditioned seat inside and enjoyed the view from afar.

Initially, Fern Forest’s journey started as a coffee plantation, a humble venture serving coffee and family-inherited recipes passed down through generations. Gradually, over the years, it has evolved from a small alley-side cafe to the spacious and elegant establishment it is today.

Furthermore, Fern Forest is not just a cafe; it combines tradition with contemporary charm. It embodies a slice of history, a testament to enduring homestyle cooking’s allure. It’s a must-visit destination in the heart of Chiang Mai’s Old Town, offering a visual and culinary treat. Whether sipping a cup of coffee, indulging in a homemade pastry, or simply soaking in the serene atmosphere, Fern Forest beckons as an undiscovered gem. I’ll definitely come back for the peanut butter French toast or one of the other delicious dishes on the menu.

And, if you are around on Sunday, the cafe has jazz at 1 and 3pm as well.
