I never get tired of visiting Chiang Dao. There is something about the mountains and small-town life that keeps bringing me back. I love finding little cafes, exploring the countryside, and discovering places I missed on previous visits. This time, Steven and I decided to stay at The View Hotel. With a name like that, I had pretty high expectations, especially in a town surrounded by mountains.

Two Days in Chiang Dao

Chiang Dao is one of those places I keep returning to whenever I visit northern Thailand. I love the mountains, small cafes, and the fact that there is always something new to explore. This time, Steven and I had two days to enjoy the area, and our friend Suwat was driving. We planned to visit a few places, enjoy some good food, and spend time at The View Hotel. I was especially looking forward to seeing the mountains from our room.

The View Hotel in Chiang Dao: A Family-run Retreat

The View Hotel is a family-run property surrounded by mountains and rice fields. The hotel has a modern design, with large windows that take advantage of the surrounding scenery. I liked the glass lobby, comfortable seating, and the mountain views visible throughout the property. It was a pleasant place to return to after exploring Chiang Dao with Steven and Suwat.

Our room at The View Hotel was modern, spacious, and comfortable. I especially liked the floor-to-ceiling windows, which brought in plenty of natural light. The wooden bathroom had a beautiful bathtub and a warm, modern design. The bed was comfortable, and everything was clean and well maintained.

One small detail I appreciated was the number of electrical outlets. Steven and I travel with phones, cameras, and other devices that need charging. Having outlets where we needed them made things more convenient. The room had everything we needed for a comfortable visit, without a lot of unnecessary extras.

Dining Experience

Breakfast was one of the things I enjoyed about staying at The View Hotel. We could choose between American and Thai breakfast options, and the food was prepared when we were ready to eat. Everything was fresh, and there was enough variety to start the day without looking for another restaurant.

One thing worth knowing is that vegetarian meals need to be requested in advance. Otherwise, both breakfast options may include meat. The hotel also has a rooftop restaurant and bar where guests can enjoy dinner or cocktails while looking out over the mountains and rice fields.

Rooftop Restaurant and Mountain Views

The rooftop was one of my favorite places at The View Hotel. From up there, we could look across the rice fields toward the mountains surrounding Chiang Dao. The restaurant had plenty of plants, comfortable seating, and artwork that gave it some personality. I especially liked having somewhere to sit outside and enjoy the scenery without leaving the property.

The rooftop serves dinner and cocktails, making it a convenient option after a day exploring. I would recommend spending some time there, even if you decide to eat somewhere else. The mountain views are one of the best features of the hotel.

Swimming Pool, Gym, and Hotel Facilities

The View Hotel has more facilities than I expected for a small hotel in Chiang Dao. There is a swimming pool, a well-equipped gym, and two air-conditioned karaoke bungalows overlooking the rice fields. The hotel also has Wi-Fi, free parking, and an elevator.

I enjoyed exploring the grounds, especially the koi pond, flowers, and garden paths. There were several places to sit outside, along with swings and decorations for photographs. The property was larger than I expected, with plenty of space to walk around without leaving the hotel.

The View is located on a quiet road off the main street in Chiang Dao, The View Hotel is close to most of the city’s attractions and is walkable to a few things. The quiet location enhances the overall tranquil atmosphere of the hotel. The hotel is wheelchair accessible, and there is an elevator on-site.

Guests can enjoy free parking and concierge services, adding convenience to their stay. You can also enjoy karaoke in the comfort of one of two enclosed air-conditioned bungalows. They are located at the rear of the property. Each one has views of the rice fields and the pool. However, Grab service is more expensive in Chiang Dao. So make sure you consult the hotel staff so you are not taken for a ride.

Getting to Chiang Dao from Chiang Mai

One of the best parts of visiting Chiang Dao was having our local friend Suwat drive us. Chiang Dao is about 75 kilometers north of Chiang Mai, but we were in no hurry to reach the hotel. Having Suwat behind the wheel meant Steven and I could enjoy the countryside instead of worrying about directions or driving on the wrong side of the road. We also had the chance to visit a couple of places along the way.

We stopped at North Cafe for a yummy lunch and Hinoki Land, a Japanese-themed attraction with traditional buildings and gardens. I love exploring places like these, especially when I have someone local showing me around. Having Suwat with us made the drive part of the experience, rather than just a way to reach Chiang Dao.

If you do not have a car, orange buses leave from Chang Puak Bus Station in Chiang Mai. When we visited, the regular bus fare was 46 baht, while the air-conditioned option was 83 baht. Fares may have changed since then. I would recommend arranging transportation once you arrive because Chiang Dao attractions are spread out.

Is The View Hotel in Chiang Dao Worth Staying At?

I expected Chiang Dao to be a little more rustic, and in some places, it was. But The View Hotel was a pleasant surprise. The rooms were modern and comfortable, the breakfast was good, and I loved the mountain views from the rooftop. The hotel also had more amenities than I expected, including a pool, gym, and beautiful gardens. I would happily stay there again.

One of my favorite memories was surprising Suwat with a room at the hotel. He had planned to sleep in the van, but Steven and I were not having that. The rooms were affordable enough that booking another one was an easy decision. After spending the day driving us around, he deserved a comfortable bed too. It was a nice way to end our visit to Chiang Dao.
