The Mountain Lodge: an Air Force Inn at Aviano AFB

Aviono Italy prosecco wine region

Don’t judge a book by its cover. The Mountain Lodge on Aviano looks pretty on the outside. But for $60 a night in the heart of the Veneto, Italy– you barely get what you pay for. But boy, oh boy… this property has a lot of issues. I stayed there for 6 nights last month and the only thing I can say about my stay was that it had a bed, a bathroom and somewhere to sit and watch the TV that displayed more snow than I’d seen in all my years living in Colorado and upstate New York.

The Mountain Lodge: an Air Force Inn at Aviano AFB

The lodge was booked solid for a few weeks, and I felt lucky to have finally gotten a room the day before I arrived in Northern Italy to visit my son in Italy.  It’s also safe to say I wasn’t happy very long once I checked into the Aviano Lodge.

The Aviano Mountain Lodge facilities

The basic room includes a kitchen (no utensils, flatware, dishes or pots, and pans), two TVs (one in the living room in front of the pullout sofa and one in the bedroom, a tub/ shower combo. There are laundry facilities and an exercise room on the property. You can purchase detergent, soda, beer, and snacks behind the front desk.

Pros:

1.  The price–
at $60 per night, its a bargain for the area.

2. The proximity to military facilities and the surrounding wine country vineyards. It’s walking distance from the Commissary, Exchange, and housing.

3. English speaking staff and familiar accommodations.

Cons:

1. No air/ heat.
According to the front desk staff, Aviano had not authorized either of the above to be turned on yet in the season. It was hot, cold and raining the week I was there.

2. Awful Cable.
More snow than anything and that’s only good when you’re talking Jon Snow or winter sports.

3. No Ice.
The machine on the second (first floor in Europe) the i.e. machine was MIA.

4. Leaks and stained ceilings.
Missing panels all up and down the hotel, it was pretty ugly.

5. Placement of electrical outlets.
Were all in the wrong places.

6. Missing faucet fixture.
Started every morning with water spouting in every which direction except straight down. And finally…

7. There was a huge stain next to my bed that was undeniably ugly. I couldn’t help thinking I had just walked onto CSI Aviano.

This is terrible. I’m so sorry that you had this experience. The property should feel ashamed of themselves and I hope they fix all of the issues.

  2. Meagan Badore

This is sad that relatives visiting their loved ones in the military are subjected to a hotel in that condition. It is nice to see someone give an honest review and not fluff it up to make it more acceptable for future guests. I hope that this will help fix the conditions of the rooms.

i’m gonna be totally honest, that stain would of sent me through the roof. while the price cannot be beat, the conditions were not good enough for me. props for you for staying that long.

What a bummer that the accommodations were so terrible! Did you complain about the issues to management? Have they seen your post and responded to it?

  5. Debby

As a Veteran, this makes me so sad. Yes we love getting discounted hotels but they should be a baseline quality. I do not know how you were able to stay that long. I hope your review gets them to fix it up.

I’d stay here. I mean, it’s not super pretty, but you can’t beat the cost! I’m all about saving. I hope to make it to Italy soon. I mostly just want to eat 😉

  7. LiveLoveAndAdventure

Thanks for your post (and the warning!). I’m pretty picky about where I stay and have not traveled internationally enough to know much about their hotels, but am headed back to Italy next year 🙂

I’ve NEVER been to a hotel on a military base that wasn’t in some degree of disrepair, but I’m a little disappointed in the AFB.
