In Search of Comfort Food

I have three purpose for sharing this post with you, my friend. First I want to encourage you to seek out Niu Rou Mien. It’s a delicious and savory bowl of braised beef and noodles found all over Taiwan.

We were hoping to find it last night at the night market. We saw and ate a lot of things, but that wasn’t one of them. Luckily, Steven’s friend at work told us exactly where to.

Not a Michelin-star

Secondly, I want to let you know that although you can find it all over the island, don’t go just anywhere to get it. Definitely visit Lao Pai Niu Rou Mien for the best noodle experience.

There are a few Michelin-rated places on the island. However, they aren’t that good. And if you read the ratings, you’ll see most of the people who went thought it was just okay. And they all overspent too. Many spent $360 ($11.74) instead of the going rate which is only $160.

Taiwan’s Green World Songshan– the best place to stay when you visit Taipei.

Backstreet & Alleys

Lastly, I just want to relive the experience of trudging through the back alleys just after it rained. It wasn’t too difficult to find with GPS. But the food was delicious and there was nothing but locals in this tiny hole in the wall that wouldn’t pass for a restaurant in the states.

Niu Rou Mien

I watched our soup of spongy, thick round noodles, tender braised beef and vegetables being made. The broth is complex like its been simmering all day and all night. Tiny specks of fat shimmer atop every spoonful. And the braised beef is tender and perfectly fatty. I loved that they didn’t cut that away. It’s where all the flavor resides, right?

Help yourself to the seasoned, chopped mustard greens, chili sauce and pepercorns on the table. However, I opted out of the additional incredients like gelled pigblood, intestines, or cow stomachs. But go for it if you’re brave.

As you’d expect, Lao Pai Niu Rou Mien is not the kind of place you linger– the turnover is fast and constant. As a matter of fact, they don’t even serve you water.

But hey! This is the home of the boba.so there’s alway a boba tea shop nearby.
