Don’t judge a book by its cover. The Mountain Lodge on Aviano looks pretty on the outside. But for $60 a night in the heart of the Veneto, Italy, you barely get what you pay for. But boy, oh boy… this property has a lot of issues. I stayed there for 6 nights last month, and the only thing I can say about my stay was that it had a bed, a bathroom, and somewhere to sit and watch the TV that displayed more snow than I’d seen in all my years living in Colorado and upstate New York.
The Mountain Lodge: an Air Force Inn at Aviano AFB
The lodge was booked solid for a few weeks, and I felt lucky to have finally gotten a room the day before I arrived in Northern Italy to visit my son in Italy. It’s also safe to say I wasn’t happy very long once I checked into the Aviano Lodge.
The Aviano Mountain Lodge facilities
The basic room includes a kitchen (no utensils, flatware, dishes or pots, and pans), two TVs (one in the living room in front of the pullout sofa and one in the bedroom, a tub/ shower combo. There are laundry facilities and an exercise room on the property. You can purchase detergent, soda, beer, and snacks behind the front desk.
Pros:
- The price — at $60 per night, it’s a bargain for the area.
- Convenient location near military facilities and surrounding wine country vineyards. Walking distance to the Commissary, Exchange, and housing.
- English-speaking staff and familiar, comfortable accommodations.
Cons:
- No air or heat.
Front desk staff said Aviano had not authorized either to be turned on for the season. It was hot, cold, and rainy during my stay. - Poor cable service.
More static than channels—only enjoyable if you like Jon Snow or winter sports. - No ice.
The machine on the second floor (first floor in Europe) was missing. - Leaks and stained ceilings.
Missing panels throughout the hotel made it look neglected. - Poor placement of electrical outlets.
Most were inconveniently located. - Missing faucet fixture.
Each morning started with water spraying in every direction except straight down. - Large stain near the bed.
It was so bad I couldn’t help thinking I’d stepped onto the set of CSI Aviano.
Contact Information
All of these issues could be addressed, but I wouldn’t book the Mountain Lodge at Aviano unless price and location matter more to you than comfort.

It might not be the most “eye-catching” hotel, it is pretty cheap! Seems like a trip to talk about, thanks for sharing! 🙂
Looks like something out of Gordon Ramsays show!
This is terrible. I’m so sorry that you had this experience. The property should feel ashamed of themselves and I hope they fix all of the issues.
Wow, this is sad. I didn’t know it was this bad.
Seems like an OK choice for the price! No air is definitely a deal breaker for me.
This is sad that relatives visiting their loved ones in the military are subjected to a hotel in that condition. It is nice to see someone give an honest review and not fluff it up to make it more acceptable for future guests. I hope that this will help fix the conditions of the rooms.
The price is good, but I would rather spend a little more for better conditions.
i’m gonna be totally honest, that stain would of sent me through the roof. while the price cannot be beat, the conditions were not good enough for me. props for you for staying that long.
I hear ta Andrea. It freaked me out so much I woyldn’t step on it.
This is such an honest review. So sorry for what you experience here.
What a bummer that the accommodations were so terrible! Did you complain about the issues to management? Have they seen your post and responded to it?
Italy is in the air it seems. I won’t say I loved this hotel but might stay given the pricing. Nice review.
I stayed because it was ubee convenient and I didn’t soend a lot of time in it.
As a Veteran, this makes me so sad. Yes we love getting discounted hotels but they should be a baseline quality. I do not know how you were able to stay that long. I hope your review gets them to fix it up.
Oh no! I’m sorry to hear this was you experience. We always stay in military inns and the Air Force ones are usually the best.
That stain by the bed would be my reason to leave the hotel. Thanks for an honest review.
Don’t think anyone will stay there. They need to sort it out.
I’d stay here. I mean, it’s not super pretty, but you can’t beat the cost! I’m all about saving. I hope to make it to Italy soon. I mostly just want to eat 😉
Thanks for your post (and the warning!). I’m pretty picky about where I stay and have not traveled internationally enough to know much about their hotels, but am headed back to Italy next year 🙂
I’ve NEVER been to a hotel on a military base that wasn’t in some degree of disrepair, but I’m a little disappointed in the AFB.
