Located about 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai offers an easy day trip or weekend escape. The journey takes 3 to 4 hours by car or bus, Chiang Rai is a kaleidoscope of colors and experiences, blending cultural landmarks, natural beauty, stunning cafes and vibrant local life. From brilliant temples to lush green tea fields, Chiang Rai offers a lively mix of sights and sensations. Here’s how to embrace the city’s colorful charm.

Saturday Walking Street

On Saturdays, Thanalai Road transforms into a lively pedestrian market from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The atmosphere buzzes with the sound of traditional music, while the streets are lined with vendors selling handcrafted goods, art, and delicious snacks. This vibrant market is the perfect place to mingle with locals and soak in the creative energy of Chiang Rai.

A Tranquil Escape at Lalitta Cafe

Similar to one of my favorite waterfall cafes, Dantewada outside Chiang Mai, Lalitta Cafe offers a serene retreat just a short distance from the city. Located near the Kok River, this charming cafe combines tranquil garden seating with picturesque views. The menu features aromatic coffee and homemade cakes, making it a delightful spot to relax and recharge. Situated about 15 minutes from the city center, Lalitta Cafe is an ideal stop before or after visiting Chiang Rai’s iconic temples.

Hiking to Khun Korn Waterfall

For nature enthusiasts, Khun Korn Waterfall is a must-visit located just 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from Chiang Rai city. The trail to this impressive 70-meter-tall waterfall takes about 30-45 minutes to hike and is moderately easy, making it accessible for most fitness levels. The path winds through lush greenery, offering a refreshing escape into nature. Along the way, you’ll find shaded areas perfect for short breaks, and though there are no temples or viewpoints en route, the waterfall itself is a breathtaking reward. Entry is free, but ensure you wear sturdy shoes, as parts of the trail can be slippery, especially after rain.

Choui Fong Tea Plantation

Located an hour’s drive (about 40 km) north of Chiang Rai, Choui Fong Tea Plantation is a picturesque destination that offers more than just stunning views of terraced tea fields. Visitors can enjoy tea tastings of locally grown brews, shop for tea-related souvenirs, and relax in the plantation’s cafe, which serves a variety of teas, pastries, and light meals. For breakfast or lunch, the cafe’s tea-infused dishes pair perfectly with the tranquil surroundings.

Nearby, you can explore additional attractions such as the Mae Sai Border Market, which is about 30 minutes away, or the Golden Triangle, another hour’s drive from the plantation, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. Open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with free entry, Choui Fong is an ideal spot for a half-day trip filled with relaxation and scenic beauty.

Where to Stay

Do you know what’s great about hotels in Chiang Rai? You can get an amazing hotel for less than $50 per night. We stayed at the De Hug Hotel & Residence just outside of the city center. It has two beautiful pools, a yummy restaurant that serves the best massaman curry for breakfast, free bike loans, and friendly staff.

Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai: Getting There

By Car: This is my preferred transportation to Chiang Rai, but we didn’t drive. Our local friend Suwat drove. It’s a scenic drive that takes around 3-4 hours.

By Bus: My least favorite way to get there is the VIP Green bus, which is popular with both budget and luxury travelers. Buses from Chiang Mai Bus Station 3 depart almost every 30 minutes, with the first bus departing at 6 AM and the last departing at 7 PM. Each bus costs about $23.

Private Tours: The first time we went to Chiang Rai, we took a private day tour. Many companies offer guided day trips, typically including stops at the White Temple and other landmarks.

Final Thoughts

We only spent two days, but that wasn’t enough to really dive deep. However, Chiang Rai pulled me in with its laid-back energy and vibrant personality. It’s not the kind of place that overwhelms you, but instead invites you to explore at your own pace. I found myself lingering longer than planned, soaking in the unique mix of creativity, nature, and culture.

The people were warm, the food was unforgettable, and the experiences felt refreshingly real. It’s a city that doesn’t try too hard—it simply lets its beauty and charm speak for itself. If you’re looking for a destination that feels effortless yet unforgettable, I think you’ll enjoy Chiang Rai.
