My Favorite Places to Eat and Drink in Daegu We aren’t limited to BBQ and traditional fare (with amusing names) in Daegu. You can get a really good bowl of pho and a great hamburger in the same neighborhood. Many restaurants have pictures you can point to, but a few have incorporated English descriptions and more than “go-to” staff person you can converse with easily. Don’t get me wrong, you don’t move to Daegu to eat like you would in Detroit, but it’s nice to have options. Where to Eat and Drink in Daegu, South Korea We like to eat out and thankfully, food and the variety of it has gotten 100% better in the last two years since moving to Daegu. Sometimes, I have no idea where I’m eating because I can’t translate the name until later. We recently had one of the best bibimbap bowls at a restaurant called Stay Married, so I guess we will do just that. I don’t chuckle when I see restaurants called Paradise Entrails Tripes Village Three Way Intersection Squid or even Bbyeo Big Cheongjindong Hangover Cure Soup… ok I lied I still do. You would, too. 1. Mr. Kim’s. Gimbap Acting on a tip that it was the best gimbap in Daegu, Steven and I headed out to Mr. Kim’s. Gimbap (also called kimbap) is Korea’s answer to a quick bite/street food. We ordered fried seafood, tuna, and bulgogi gimbap for variety. Seaweed is stuffed with steamed rice and vegetables, rolled, and cut into slightly larger than bite-size pieces. It’s a very inexpensive 13,500￦ lunch that will fill you up fast. Don’t try to bite them in half… you’ll make a mess– so open wide. Mr. Kim’s is located under the SK Leaders Sky building (the parking garage at Home Plus has free parking) in Suseong Lake. 2. Gate 9 I love this restaurant because it has good Thai food and I can see it from my house, which means it’s close. Here is the video review I did on my Facebook page. I went for lunch yesterday and had the beef pho for the first time. It was delicious. Gate 9 serves beer, wine, and a couple of mojito cocktails. Located on the 8th floor of the Hyundai Department Store, 2077, Dalgubeol-daero, Jung-gu, Daegu 41936 3. New Saladdin New Saladdin has been serving Indian and Pakistani food for five years. Rasheed moved from Pakistan 12 years ago, worked as a cook for three years on the southside, and fell in love with a local and decided to stay. Located directly across from the KNU north entrance, parking can be difficult. The lunch specials are great value but aren’t unavailable on weekends or public holidays. I haven’t seen the truck yet, have you? 4. Nazur Kebab One of our late-night and quick-bite favorites recently reopened in a new location downtown. The new location is nothing more of a large kiosk than a restaurant. But there are some tables in the back. This is my go-to for takeout on a Friday night. Try the mixed (chicken & lamb) kebab or burger. Look for the Kebab truck one day soon. 5. Pan Asia The restaurant re-opened in May 2016 and is located on the second floor opposite Kiki’s and serves a great selection of entrees from 5 Asian countries: Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore… notable exclusion was Korea. The wait was longer than usual, the menu is in Konglish with pictures, they serve cocktails and beer, the prices were reasonable and we were the only Westerners in the place… which was surprising and makes me think it’s not well known it has reopened and I recommend you go.21-9 Samdeok-dong 1-ga, Jung-gu +82 53-287-7940 We don’t eat pork because we can choose what we want to eat, and that’s it. These look like amazing places. I really should go to South Korea as my brothers wife and family is from there. I love the name of the place being called Stay Married. I remember being in China and seeing Santa cigarettes there. Was interesting, not that I smoke. Reply

I hope one day I get the chance to travel so I can try some of these places. In the meantime, I might look into some Korean BBQ places here – I keep seeing stuff about Korean BBQ on several of the blogs I read lately, and it’s gotten me a little curious. Reply
Thats one of the things I am encouraging people to do, travel around there hometowns. You would be surprised what you can find if you do a little research or stop by the tourism bureau and see what they consider noteworthy for visitors. Reply
The name of the dish is in English and there are pictures. Dishes range from 9,000 W to 13,000 with some less, a few seafood dishes are more. Reply
