Exploring Downtown Dubuque: A Blend of History, Culture, and Scenic Views Posted on September 7, 2024September 19, 2024 I recently found myself in Dubuque, Iowa, because Steven wanted to check out a couple of breweries. Since I’m not a beer fan, I spent the afternoon exploring downtown Dubuque instead. Dubuque is a city that effortlessly combines its rich history with a modern, vibrant charm. The city straddles the Mississippi River, offering visitors a unique experience, from historic landmarks to breathtaking views. Dubuque has something for everyone, whether you’re taking in the city’s iconic architecture, enjoying panoramic vistas from the bluffs, or indulging in the local cafe scene. This tri-state perspective is one of the reasons Dubuque is known as the “Masterpiece on the Mississippi.” The elevator’s location underscores the city’s blend of natural beauty and historical significance, making it a must-visit spot for anyone exploring downtown Dubuque and wanting to see all three states from one vantage point. History of the Fenelon Place Elevator One of Dubuque’s most iconic attractions is the Fenelon Place Elevator, often called the 4th Street Elevator. Built-in 1882 by J.K. Graves, this funicular was initially a personal convenience for Graves, a local banker, and former state senator. He constructed the elevator as a shortcut to his home on the bluffs of Dubuque. The steep incline and incredible views quickly made it a public attraction, drawing visitors from all over. The elevator, the world’s shortest, steepest, and most scenic railway, continues to offer spectacular views of Dubuque and the neighboring states of Illinois and Wisconsin. Cafe Hopping in Downtown Dubuque After experiencing the historical charm and scenic beauty of the Fenelon Place Elevator, there’s no better way to immerse yourself in the local culture than by exploring downtown Dubuque. The city’s downtown area is filled with cozy cafes that offer both delicious treats and a glimpse into the local lifestyle. “Persistence,” by COLD, on the Smokestack building at 62 E. Seventh St. in Dubuque. Wayfarer Coffee, LLC I began my morning at Wayfarer Coffee, LLC, located at 955 Washington St, Dubuque, IA 52001, on the first floor of the Schmid Innovation Center. Wayfarer Coffee is open from 7 AM to 1 PM on weekdays and from 8 AM to 1 PM on weekends. The cafe is adorable, very clean, and comfortable, creating a perfect environment to start the day. The barista was incredibly friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. For more information, you can visit their website. Beakers Cafe Next, I headed to Beakers Cafe at 1690 Elm St, Suite 270, Dubuque, IA 52001. It’s tucked inside the Crescent Community Health Center, making it a hidden gem when exploring downtown Dubuque. Beakers Cafe is a veteran-owned (Army) coffee shop with a welcoming atmosphere. There’s also plenty of free parking. The owner, Paul, is involved in every aspect of the cafe. His attention to detail shows in the quality of the drinks. His cold brew is exceptional, easily outshining the big chains. The unique twist of using Wayfarer beans adds to the flavor. Paul’s dedication extends to small touches. For example, his business card doubles as a punch card. You get double punches on your first visit—a neat incentive to return. Veterans get a 10% discount and a free coffee on Veterans Day. Beakers Cafe offers a range of beverages. The menu includes rich seasonal peppermint mocha and refreshing energized lemonade in warmer months. They also serve hot chocolate, perfect for a cold day, along with various snacks. Options include scones, cookies, and danishes. Despite the name, Beakers Cafe isn’t science-themed. It’s named after Paul’s fraternity nickname, which he shares with the popular Muppet character. The cafe’s charm lies in its community feel. Paul is always ready for a great conversation, making every visit personal and welcoming. Devour Cafe Finally, I stopped for lunch at Devour Cafe, located at 1798 Central Ave, Dubuque, IA 52001. Devour Cafe is open daily from 8 AM to 3 PM, with shorter hours on holidays. It’s a must-visit for anyone who loves great coffee and delicious food. Ryan Dies, a 6-year barista, 15-year chef, and 6-year baker, runs the cafe. He brings a passion for everything coffee-related. I enjoyed a Mayan latte, a bold drink with a hint of spice (pepper). It was paired with a knife-and-fork curry chicken croissant that was both flavorful and satisfying. The cafe itself is very comfortable, featuring an eclectic design. The seating options include wooden upholstered chairs, metal and wood benches, and open ducts with exposed brick walls. The space is filled with real plants and coffee-related knickknacks, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. On weekends, you can even enjoy live classical music, adding to the cafe’s unique charm. For more information, you can visit their Facebook page. I sat in the window at a game table with a great view of the corner, which added to the enjoyable ambiance. Carnegie Stout Public Library The Carnegie-Stout Public Library, a stunning landmark in downtown Dubuque, dates back to 1902 and showcases classic Beaux-Arts architecture. The main facade features a Roman Corinthian portico modeled after the Pantheon in Rome, with stately columns that add to its grandeur. The north and west sides are made from Indiana Bedford limestone, while the south and east sides are constructed from white brick, creating a subtle yet elegant contrast. Inside, the library’s rotunda greets visitors with a dramatic sense of arrival, its soaring ceilings and ornate design reflecting the building’s historical significance. The library’s iconic cupola crowns the structure, drawing attention as a city landmark. Whether you’re a book lover or an architecture enthusiast, the Carnegie-Stout Public Library is a must-visit when exploring downtown Dubuque. Its rich history and beautiful design make it a key piece of Dubuque’s cultural heritage. “Wild Rose,” by DiDi, located at 395 Main St. in Dubuque. “Persistence,” by COLD, on the Smokestack building at 62 E. From large-scale artworks on the sides of buildings to intricate designs in alleyways, these murals add a dynamic layer to the urban landscape. While exploring the murals, I had the pleasure of meeting Carissa, a business owner at one of the mural sites. She stepped outside to share the history behind the mural on her building, explaining that each mural in Dubuque has a story—none are random. Carissa’s enthusiasm was infectious as she spoke about the meaning and significance behind the artwork. She also suggested a few other murals that I should check out, making sure I didn’t miss some of the city’s most meaningful pieces. To help visitors explore this outdoor gallery, Voices Studios has curated a self-guided tour that takes you through the best murals scattered across town. This tour allows you to appreciate the creativity and stories behind each piece at your own pace, making it a perfect activity for art lovers and those looking to experience Dubuque’s local culture. Voices Studios, located at 1585 Central Ave, Dubuque, IA 52001, is the creative force behind this initiative. Their website has more information about the self-guided tour and other projects. A Perfect Evening by the River: Wine, Art, and History The Art on the River installations, an ever-changing outdoor exhibit, add a creative flair to the riverfront, showcasing works from talented artists. Each piece interacts beautifully with the natural surroundings, making the walk both peaceful and inspiring. Following the art walk, I visited the nearby Shot Tower, one of Dubuque’s most iconic historical landmarks. This towering structure, used in the 19th century to produce lead shot, stands as a testament to the city’s industrial past. To cap off the evening, I enjoyed a glass of wine at Stone Cliff Winery and Star Brewery, located at 600 Star Brewery Dr, Dubuque, IA 52001. Housed in the historic Star Brewery building, which dates back to 1898, these establishments blend the charm of the past with a cozy, modern atmosphere. The winery offers a selection of locally crafted wines, while the brewery provides a range of craft beers. The exposed brick walls and vintage decor create an inviting space to relax and reflect on the day. Whether you’re a history buff, an art lover, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, this experience along the river is a must when exploring downtown Dubuque.
