Like most things here, Valentine’s Day has be co-opted and re-constructed into something else. Sure it started off as a marketing campaign to sell chocolate (sound familiar), but it soon morphed into an even larger marketing campaign to sell more chocolate, jewelry and even speed dating venues. That shouldn’t surprise you, Korea really likes to outdo themselves when ever possible.

Black Day in South Korea is an unofficial holiday observed on April 14 each year by singles, associated with Valentine’s Day who did not receive presents on Valentine’s Day or White Day, where they gather, dressed in black, black accessories, black shoes—and eat jjajangmyeon, noodles covered in black bean paste.
