Taking Flight: My First Experience with Aerial Yoga

I just tried my first flying yoga class! Also known as aerial yoga, this style mixes traditional yoga with a fabric hammock. It’s supposed to boost your physical and mental health with a lot of benefits. Honestly, it was tough at first—my butt hurt and it was a hit to my pride. But even though it was hard, I’m curious about the benefits and looking forward to improving.

Health Benefits of Aerial Yoga

Improving Flexibility

I thought I was still pretty flexible. I am not. One of the primary benefits of flying yoga is that it is a great way to improve flexibility while building strength. The hammock allows for deeper, stretches, increased joint mobility, and more challenging poses, which can help improve your overall flexibility and range of motion. But it is very difficult to maneuver if you aren’t flexible or have a strong core.

Strengthening Core

Core exercises are boring but necessary for posture and just about everything else like just sitting up in bed without leaning on the nightstand. Oh, you don’t have that problem– yet? Well, the unstable nature of the fabric hammock requires the use of core muscles for balance, which can help strengthen your core. I found many of the exercises difficult, Any you wouldn’t think you could work up a sweat. But I was overwhelmed by the concentration it took to keep the fabric stable. Aerial yoga can improve overall stability, and give you the power to sit up without that freakin nightstand.

Stress & Anxiety Reduction

Flying yoga can also help reduce stress and anxiety. The gentle swaying motion of the hammock can help calm the mind and promote relaxation, while the deep breathing exercises that are a part of the practice can help reduce stress and anxiety.

They say, the practice of flying yoga can help improve focus, concentration, and mental clarity, which can help to reduce stress and promote overall well-being. Honestly, at times all I felt was that fabric digging into my fleshy parts.

Improve Posture

Aerial yoga can also help improve posture and alleviate back pain– something I’ve had a problem with in the past. (I had back surgery 3 years ago). Hammocks can help decompress the spine, relieving pressure on the back and promoting proper alignment. This can help alleviate back pain and improve overall posture. It can also help stretch and strengthen the back muscles, reducing the risk of back pain and injury.

Improve Cardiovascular Health

The practice of flying yoga can also improve cardiovascular health. The use of the hammock can help to improve circulation and increase blood flow, while the cardiovascular benefits of traditional yoga are also present in flying yoga. This can help to reduce the risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular issues.

Local Aerial Yoga Classes

I’ve gone to two studios and I love them both for different reasons. Both are located in Suseong. Both have great instructors, facilities, and I felt welcomed. And both studios offer Pilates and bungee workouts which I am going to try tonight. And they both offer packages, but I’m not ready for that– yet. Abd that’s the biggest difference– the day class price.

I like the building All Day Studio is located in much better because it’s more modern. It also has an elevator, a wall of windows in the bungee room, and a free parking garage across the street.

The Takeaway from Flying Yoga

Overall, flying yoga looks easier than it is. But it’s a fun and unique way to exercise while improving physical and mental health. It’s a great option for those looking to try something new and challenge themselves in a supportive and welcoming environment. At the beginning of the class, I had to watch everyone else. But by the end of the class I felt very comfortable. I also learned a few words in Hangul that I would not have been in the position to learn. Whether you’re an experienced yogi or a beginner, flying yoga is worth trying for its numerous health benefits.
