Milyang 189– a Fortuitous Discovery

Milyang 189 is a captivating café in the city of the same name. It combines old-world European charm with contemporary Korean café culture. The café is tucked away and hidden. It stands as a testament to the harmonious marriage, lol. Steven found the cafe and I discovered a rose garden I wanted to visit. It just happened that both sat side by side. Milyang 189 is nestled between a magical rose garden and a vibrant wildflower garden. It was funny that we independently chose these spots for our Saturday outing.

Milyang 189

However, what sets Milyang 189 apart is its unique location. Now, bear in mind that the letters r and l constantly transpose. As a result, people also spell it as “Miryang” due to the transposition of letters. The café positions itself between two enchanting landscapes. The first garden is a mesmerizing rose garden, while the second garden is a lively wildflower garden. Nature’s bounty encloses it. A stone path winds through the wild blooms.

The Courtyard

The central courtyard is a haven of calming water sounds, with wrought iron seating thoughtfully arranged around a creative fountain. A whimsical iron-topped gazebo, perched on a grand marble base, adds to the allure, inviting visitors to bask the cafe’s European charm.

The Rose Garden

The rose garden, with its riot of colors, showcases roses in every imaginable hue. Moreover, it boasts a serene lily pond, elegant statuary, and even a three-story treehouse-like platform. Nested within this whimsical setting, the café is graced with a splendid backdrop, further enhancing its appeal.

The Wildflower Garden

On the other side, a wildflower garden, bordering a cobblestone path, unfolds. In addition, it showcases wrought-iron seating tables and chairs nestled among tall stalks of bright yellow and purple flowers. This arrangement provides another beautiful vista for café visitors.

River Walk

Positioned next to a riverside walkway, the café is a great spot to take a leisurely stroll post-indulging in some delicious desserts. In the grassy area, an eye-catching large clock captures attention (unfortunately, I missed the chance to take a photo). We also got to observe a few folks donned in waders, fishing in the refreshing river waters.

The Architecture and Ambiance

Milyang 189, designed like a vintage European villa, encapsulates a tranquil courtyard within its two-story structure, offering a serene retreat or weekend getaway.

Yummy Pastries

Everything is served on colorful china at Milyang 189, which we both love. The cafe doesn’t use plastic forks or paper cups. We started by ordering a pineapple-filled strudel, a blueberry pastry, and an almond croissant. My lemonade with lime and rosemary sprig was a refreshing accompaniment, while Steven’s iced americano was robust and perfectly balanced.

The Elegant Interiors

With high ceilings, intricate mouldings, and paneling, the café exudes an atmosphere of old-world charm. Furthermore, the eclectic mix of British colonial, Queen Anne, and French furniture styles enhances the ambiance.

Spacious and Welcoming

Milyang 189 is a spacious haven. Its accordion doors on both sides invite the soft breeze, while large marble-tiled floors, exposed brick, and ductwork ceilings introduce an industrial chic element. Floor-to-ceiling windows, framed with white sheers, allow natural light to cascade into the café. By doing so, this further enhances the warm ambiance of the space.

The Decor

The cafe is adorned with chandeliers, fringe-covered desk lamps, rooftop views, bare-bottomed cherub statues, bookshelves sprinkled with writing desks, classic marble statues, and towering potted trees. Hidden balconies and intimate seating spots offer a sense of privacy within the lively environment. A private room featuring a massive crystal chandelier caters to those seeking an exclusive experience.

The Melodious Charm

The cafe’s charm is heightened by the gentle strains of easy jazz, classical, and contemporary full-orchestra music that fill the air, adding to the elegance of the open space.

As we concluded our visit to Milyang 189, joy and satisfaction filled us. This cafe, with its blend of European aesthetics, delicious pastries, and enchanting surroundings, is a true haven in Milyang. Here’s to more serendipitous discoveries!

While You’re Here

There are quite a few beautiful temples and other landmarks dotted around the city. One of them, Yeongnamnu Pavilion in Miryang sits majestically atop a hill, commanding a panoramic view of the river that meanders gracefully below. Perched at a vantage point, the pavilion offers visitors a captivating perspective of the surrounding landscape. The pavilion’s elevated position not only enhances the scenic beauty but also imbues a sense of tranquility and serenity.
