Drive the Romantic Road in Germany– Starting & Ending Points

The Romantic Road, originally a medieval trade route, still showcases much of its historical charm. As you drive, you’ll follow a path that meanders through secluded countryside, connecting fortified towns and villages adorned with gothic cathedrals, half-timbered houses, and fachwerk structures. You’ll pass under arched gateways, flanked by guard towers, as you drive alongside vineyards and crystal-clear ponds, until your journey culminates in the stunning Bavarian Alps.

Starting Point:
Würzburg, 75 miles southeast of Frankfurt

End Point:
Füssen (Castle Neuschwanstein), 82 miles southwest of MunichTravel Tips

• Duration: Allow at least 4–5 days to fully experience the route.
• Navigation: Follow the brown ‘Romantische Straße’ signs, as GPS may not always align with the scenic path.
• Best Direction: Traveling from north to south (Würzburg to Füssen) is recommended for a grand finale at the Alps.

Würzburg and the Residenz Palace

Rothenburg’s Christmas spirit is alive year-round at the Kaethe Wohlfahrt Christmas Village. For a festive dive into history, the German Christmas Museum is a must-see, showcasing ornaments and exhibits from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Traffic is restricted in the historic district between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm, and again from 7:00 pm until 6:00 am the following morning, ensuring a peaceful exploration of the area.

Dinkelsbühl

In Dinkelsbühl, the old town is renowned for its 16 fortified medieval towers and multiple authentic city gates. Augsburg

Pfaffenwinkel

Pfaffenwinkel, or “Pastor’s Corner,” is celebrated for its stunning churches and pristine landscapes. You’ll be transported back in time when you visit the Wieskirche in Steingaden, an 18th-century rococo masterpiece nestled in the heart of the Bavarian countryside.

Fussen– Aka Cinderella’s Castle

Füssen’s Neuschwanstein Castle, often known as Cinderella’s Castle, is an iconic but frequently crowded destination. You’ll marvel at this staple of the Romantic Road, which hasn’t lost any of its charm despite its popularity. Need to Know

• Neuschwanstein has 6,000 visitors a day during the summer; so the best time to visit is spring or fall.
• The walk up to Neuschwanstein is not stroller friendly; however, transportation is available for a small fee.
• For the best panoramic pictures, take the walk up to Mary’s bridge. The bridge crosses a spectacular waterfall and gives you a breathtaking view of Neuschwanstein and the plains beyond.
• Do not take pictures or videos inside the castle.

The Romantic Road Tourist Association

The Romantic Road Tourist Association offers day trips from Frankfurt (to Wurzburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber). Other tours from Munich (to Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Castles) are also available. They also offer a shopping excursion to the Romantic Road Outlet Stores from Frankfurt.
