After 26 long and rewarding years, my husband has finally reached a pinnacle in his career that few can claim, and today, I’m overflowing with pride and excitement. Not only is he ascending to a new rank, but he’s also morphing into what might as well be a mythical creature. Yes, you heard that right—my husband, with his strength, wit, intelligence, and infectious humor, is officially becoming a unicorn. Today, he earns the promotion to Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5), an honor so rare and extraordinary it places him among legends like the Phoenix, alongside flying pigs, and right next to the often-sought but rarely-seen common sense. The reasons CW5 is known as a unicorn go beyond its rarity, highlighting the exceptional expertise needed at this level. It’s like seeing a modern-day fairy tale come to life in the military. Pin it. Why is a Chief CW5 Called a Unicorn? Chief Warrant Officer 5s (CW5s), easily recognized by their distinctive insignia of five black squares on a silver bar, are the top achievers in the U.S. Army’s Warrant Officer ranks. These officers are rare finds, often referred to as “unicorns” because of how uncommon and valuable they are. Earning this rank is a major feat; less than 1% of all warrant officers reach this level, which really sets them apart as leaders in their fields. In their day-to-day roles, CW5s act as senior advisors in specialized areas like aviation, intelligence, or maintenance. Their deep experience and extensive knowledge are not just for show—they actively shape major decisions and oversee essential operations. It’s not just about giving advice; they are the ones ensuring everything runs smoothly, from high-tech deployments to critical missions. Their unique blend of skills and leadership makes them absolutely vital to the Army’s success. Once, a young soldier was so taken aback at seeing CW5 Steven—he had never seen a CW5 before. He stopped mid-stride and asked, “Sir, are you an officer?” It was a moment of lighthearted confusion that underscored just how special these rankings are, and it gave everyone a good laugh. A Quick Dive into Warrant Officer History The story of warrant officers goes way back in the Army’s history, starting in the early 20th century. Originally, these roles were for experts too valuable for regular enlisted positions. They didn’t necessarily command troops, but they possessed crucial skills. As technology and strategy evolved, the Army needed more specialized leaders. The CW5 rank was established in 1992 to meet this need. They’re the top dogs in technical know-how, leading the charge in adapting and managing new tech and systems. Why CW5s Are Important to the Army CW5s are crucial for the Army’s success. They make sure the Army’s strategies and operations are top-notch and up-to-date with the latest tech and methods. Their unique skills bridge the gap between soldier know-how and officer plans, ensuring the Army is always prepared and effective. That’s why reaching the rank of CW5 isn’t just a personal achievement—it’s a big win for the whole Army. The term ‘unicorn’ perfectly captures the elusive and prestigious nature of the CW5 rank. Celebrating a Milestone: My Husband, the Unicorn I don’t often share my husband’s personal life here, as he prefers to keep things low-key. He only uses LinkedIn and Untappd, and Untappd gets most of the attention! Still, he’s become a recurring figure in our stories. He’s the meticulous logistician who critiques my driving and hates when I take pictures of his meals. In our marriage, I sketch the puzzle’s edges, and he carefully fills in the middle. Today is different, as I feel the need to celebrate his latest professional milestone openly. Achieving Chief Warrant Officer 5 is a huge accomplishment. It’s a rare rank that it’s earned him the nickname “unicorn.” This isn’t just a playful term—it reflects his unique role in the military. Being promoted “below zone,” ahead of schedule and on his first review, is no small feat. This achievement is remarkable with less than 1% of 480,000 active-duty soldiers reaching CW5. It makes my husband, my very own unicorn, a sparkling reality. In celebrating this rare occasion, I’m not just honoring his career but also our journey together. His promotion is a personal triumph and a proud moment for our family. It’s a cause for celebration among colleagues and friends who understand the rarity of this accomplishment. A Celebration Open to All The upcoming promotion ceremony has created quite a buzz, with attendees excited by the rarity of a CW5 promotion. The CW5 rank is so rare, people often compare it to seeing a unicorn. One sergeant brought his entire platoon because none of them had ever seen a Black CW5 before. This excitement is why we’ve opened our doors wide—everyone is welcome to celebrate. Having recently moved to Fort Riley, our guest list includes new colleagues eager to attend, along with lifelong friends who have supported us through various postings. Adding a personal touch, a close former commander who knows my husband well will officiate. He’ll share personal stories instead of reading a formal bio, which will make the day even more intimate. Among the guests, my dad traveled from Rochester to witness this milestone. His presence, along with family and friends, highlights the love and support that have guided my husband’s journey to this proud moment in his career. The Timing is Bittersweet The timing aligns perfectly with our daughter’s Navy re-enlistment in Italy. She’s excited to continue her service, and Steven will administer her oath, maintaining a cherished family tradition. Soon, we’re off to Italy to celebrate her commitment—led by her dad, the newly minted unicorn. The Ceremony & Party The ceremony was a vibrant showcase of military tradition with Steven at the helm, thoughtfully orchestrating every detail. He honored his mentors with flowers and plaques, infusing the event with a touch of humor. As it concluded with the Army song and blessings from the chaplain, we transitioned to a festive lunch. Although we kept the official reception modest with simple sandwiches and veggies for about 60 attendees, the real celebration kicked off at our home. There, we hosted a lavish Jamaican BBQ for our close friends and family, catered by Negril Caribbean Restaurant. The undisputed star of the evening? A heavenly sheet cake that nearly eclipsed the day’s festivities. Thanks and Final Thoughts Would he change a thing about the day? Absolutely not! Though he joked that Jennifer Hudson singing the National Anthem would’ve been perfect. I am an Army Brat, and I love all the military protocols and personnel. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us, especially those who traveled far. A big thanks to Fort Riley’s Public Relations and Protocols Office for capturing every moment. Their attention to detail elevated the entire ceremony, making it truly memorable. It wasn’t just about preserving memories; they made the day special. What makes a CW5 a unicorn isn’t only their rarity, but also the exceptional skills soldiers like my husband bring to the Army. Like it. Pin it.
