AllTrails for Beginners: How to Choose the Right Hike Every Time

Posted on November 16, 2018November 16, 2025
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Tomorrow is National Take a Hike Day.  But I don’t need an excuse to go hiking. It’s become a passion ever since I lived in South Korea. Ever since then, I have always been looking for resources to help me map out the best trails. And one website, Alltrails.com, has been consistent no matter where we live. And I am looking for to new trails here in the Kansas Flint Hills.

Tomorrow is National Take a Hike Day. I don't need an excuse to go hiking. But Alltrails.com is my goto Internet trail resource wherever the Army sends us.

National Take a Hike Day

November 17 is National Take a Hike Day. With more than 60,000 miles of trails in the National Trail System across all 50 states, there is no lack of opportunity to take a hike. Hiking can burn between 400-550 calories per hour. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Hiking is also a lot more fun with a buddy.

Why should I create an account on Alltrails.com?

Creating a basic account is free. It’s a crowd-sourced resource for locating hiking trails. It includes trail maps, reviews, and pictures from millions of hikers, runners, and bikers. You can search by location, difficulty, and distance. With a few clicks, you can find out whether a trail is stroller or dog-friendly. You can also share the details from your outdoor adventures on social media.

Alltrails Pro allows you to create customized trail maps with overlays for indexes like heat, air quality, and satellite weather. You can create and download custom maps, share them with friends, or print them out as a backup. Once downloaded, they are available no matter whether you have access to the Internet. Alltrails Pro is also ad-free, so you can enjoy the peace of mind nature provides.

Like it. Pin it.
