When I was looking for a place to stay in Malta, I initially searched where everyone else searches… Valletta, Slema, or in the beach resort areas of St. Paul’s or St. Julian’s Bay. There are a ton of big resorts, fancy hotels, and hostels in each location. I even booked two before canceling my booking.com reservation. They just didn’t seem right until I found the Il-Wileg Bed and Breakfast on Gozo, one of Malta’s three islands.

Il-Wileġ Bed and Breakfast on Gozo
I read a blog post about Gozo and it piqued my interest. There were a lot of little towns built atop hills with the apropos narrow twisty roads to access them.
Then I found the Il-Wileġ Bed & Breakfast, a little bed, and breakfast in the town of Qala. It’s run by a guy named Martin. The reviews were pretty good, the pictures were exactly what I was looking for and the price was right in line with my budget. So I booked it.
Then I realized it wasn’t on the main island of Malta. The BnB is located Bed and Breakfast on Gozo, one of Malta’s sister islands.
The Gozo Ferry
I started searching the ferry prices, once I decided to stay at the Il-Wileġ Bed and Breakfast on Gozo, but the information was sketchy. I sent an email to Martin who quickly replied with the ferry schedule and pricing for me and my rental car.
The Gozo Channel Ferry had extensive hours, pretty much 24 hours, and the price for a roundtrip was €15.70 during the day and €12.80 for evening transportation. You pay for the trip on the Gozo side of the trip.
The Gozo Channel Ferry is very nice. There is free WI-FI on the boat and in the terminal. There is a cafeteria and convenience store onboard, although I found it to be quite expensive for the 25-minute ride.

A Sweet Upgrade & Terrace
It was pretty, but it’s not exactly what I expected. I thought I booked a room with a balcony. He scurried downstairs and brought up my reservation. In the center, it was very clear. I had booked the Lavender Room. He could see I was disappointed and offered to show me another room the following day.
The following morning, Martin knocked on the door. There was a cancellation, the room with the terrace was available next door. As soon as I walked in, I knew I was home. Other amenities include free WI-FI, International Cable TV, air conditioning, free parking, and complimentary coffee/tea service in the lobby.
The room rate for September for a Bed and Breakfast on Gozo was €80 for the lavender room and €90 for the room with a view.
The Village of Qala
The village of Qala has a lot of construction going on. It appears it is ripe for BnB’s and vacation homes. Qala does in fact sit upon a hill and is less than 10 minutes from the port and is responsible for quite a few Bed and Breakfast on Gozo. The streets are narrow and steep, with a few jackknives turns thrown in to really get your heart pumping. All the above made me a little leery about exploring, but I found a couple of restaurants and churches that were lovely.
One thing that I will never forget is that I had to drive THROUGH a little restaurant every evening. Yup, they set up the tables with just enough room for a small car to shimmy by.
