How to Find Travel Blog Topics When You Aren’t Traveling?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Travel blogging can feel tough when you’re not on the road. Limited funds, daily responsibilities, or simply needing a break can leave you searching for inspiration. But staying home doesn’t mean running out of ideas. With a little creativity, you can keep your content fresh and engaging for your readers. Here’s how I find travel blog topics, even when I’m not traveling.

Table of Contents

  • Revamp and Refresh Old Content

How to find travel blog topics when you aren't traveling?

Explore Your Local Area

Your hometown or current city can be just as inspiring as faraway destinations. Treat it like a new travel destination:

  • Visit local parks, wineries, shops, festivals, or restaurants.
  • Talk to the people there and share their unique stories.
  • Write about how these places make your everyday life feel like an adventure.

Some of my favorite blog posts come from exploring nearby trails, trying new restaurants, or attending local events.

Revamp and Refresh Old Content

Don’t overlook the content you’ve already created. Old blog posts can become new again:

  • Update them with fresh details, current information, or better photos.
  • Use news events or trends to make older posts relevant.
  • Share new insights or perspectives you’ve gained since writing the original.

Sometimes, revisiting your archives can spark ideas for entirely new posts.

Draw Inspiration From Your Audience

Your readers are a goldmine for ideas:

  • Pay attention to the questions and comments they leave on your blog or social media.
  • Write follow-up posts to dive deeper into their interests.
  • Use platforms like Quora, Reddit, or Facebook groups to see what people in your niche are asking or discussing.

Engaging with your audience not only generates ideas but also builds a stronger connection with them.

Keep an Eye on Trends

Stay updated on what’s trending in the travel world:

  • Follow hashtags on Twitter or Instagram to see what people are talking about.
  • Check travel magazines, blogs, and websites like Conde Nast or Huffington Post Travel.
  • Look for unique angles on trending topics to make your post stand out.

Keeping up with trends helps ensure your content feels timely and relevant.

Share Tangential Stories

Not every blog post needs to focus on a destination. Write about:

  • Your journey as a travel blogger.
  • Books, movies, or documentaries that inspire your wanderlust.
  • Personal experiences, like attending a conference or searching for sponsors.

Even everyday life can provide material for compelling stories when you view it through the lens of a traveler.

Create a Work of Fiction

Tap into your imagination and write a fictional piece inspired by travel. Perhaps it’s about a dream trip or a story set in a place you love. I often pull snippets from the book I’ve been writing for years to keep my blog interesting. Fiction allows you to explore themes and ideas creatively while giving your readers something fresh and unexpected.

Support Fellow Bloggers

Writer’s block is a great time to support others in the blogging community. Reading other travel blogs or engaging with their content can inspire new ideas. Think about how you can add your perspective or expand on topics they’ve touched on.

Observe Everyday Life

Finally, don’t underestimate the inspiration in the world around you. Everyday interactions, people you meet, or even overheard conversations can spark creative ideas. Life has a way of surprising us when we least expect it. It’s the major inspiration for finding new travel blog topics every day.

I am not solely a travel blogger but I do give info to my readers about what I find when I periodically travel. I will look at Quora. It sounds like a great resource.

These are great ideas to get the blogging inspiration going! I mostly write on parenting, movie reviews and Christianity so I’m usually thinking along those lines and most of the time ideas come to me when I’m relaxing. Like when taking a shower haha!

I’ve never really thought about writing for a travel blog and having to plan for when you can’t travel. I know I sometimes get inspiration from other bloggers as well so I’m glad to see it on the list!
