We weren’t chasing adventure. We just needed a change of scenery, less than two hours away. Naperville gave us that and a little more—tree-lined paths along the river, a cozy cafe with mismatched mugs, garden benches tucked between blooms, and meals that didn’t feel rushed. Our 36 hours in Naperville were low-key, comfortable, and exactly what we were looking for.

Aquaviva Winery

We began our 36 hours in Naperville at Aquaviva Winery in nearby Maple Park. The tasting room was warm and open, with tall windows facing the vineyard. We sat outside with a full glass of rosé and a shared cheese board. A wedding party was taking photos nearby, and the whole setting felt cinematic—soft light, laughter in the background, and that first quiet sip of wine after a full day of walking.

Naperville Riverwalk

We started with a long walk along the Naperville Riverwalk. You can walk on either side of the DuPage River—both paths are lined with fountains, sculptures, memorials, and shaded benches. Some sections were under construction, but that didn’t take away from the experience. We crossed several footbridges, stopped to watch ducks below, and passed other couples doing exactly what we were—slowing down. The Riverwalk felt like the heart of the town, and it set a relaxed tone for the rest of our day.

Egg Harbor Cafe

We arrived at Egg Harbor Cafe just in time for brunch. It was bright and inviting, with mismatched mugs and friendly staff who knew their regulars by name. I ordered the sweet potato and chicken hash, and Steven had the lobster scramble. Both were hot, flavorful, and filling without being heavy. The space buzzed with energy but didn’t feel rushed. It’s the kind of place where the coffee flows, the staff smiles, and you think—this was a good call.

Downtown Naperville Boutiques

After brunch, we wandered through Downtown Naperville, popping into local boutiques and specialty shops. I found a delicate gold necklace I couldn’t resist. Steven browsed the vinyl records at a small music shop. We picked up a few gifts and shared a chocolate truffle from a family-owned candy store. The sidewalks were wide and walkable, lined with planters and benches. There’s a calm in towns like this—you can browse, talk, and take your time.

The Morton Arboretum

We drove to nearby Lisle to visit The Morton Arboretum, and it quickly became one of our favorite stops. With more than 1,700 acres of beautifully landscaped trails and rare trees from around the world, it’s both a botanical garden and a living museum. We walked the Meadow Lake Trail and sat beside the water watching birds dip and dive. The air smelled like pine and damp earth. It was peaceful in a way that felt earned—not quiet, but calming. We could have stayed for hours. If you’re craving calm without going far, 36 hours in Naperville might be exactly what you need.

Sparrow Coffee

We needed a pick-me-up and stopped at Sparrow Coffee, which came highly recommended. The place was packed—every table full, a line out the door, and baristas working with the speed and focus of a championship team. It was loud and a little chaotic, but the coffee was worth it. I ordered a cappuccino with oat milk, and Steven had a cortado. We shared a berry tart that looked like it came from a Paris patisserie. We didn’t linger, but we were glad we came.

Fabyan Japanese Garden

The Fabyan Japanese Garden in Geneva, like the one in Rockford, was a quiet and beautiful place to slow down. It’s tucked away in a forest preserve and not very large, but every inch of it is intentional. Gravel paths, stone lanterns, a red bridge arching over still water—it felt like a breath held gently in the middle of the woods. We didn’t say much, just wandered slowly, stopping to sit and take it in.

Where We Stayed

36 hours in Naperville is the kind of break that reminds you how good a small getaway can be—walks by the river, quiet gardens, good meals, and no pressure to do more than you feel like. We stayed at the Chicago Marriott Naperville, about a 10-minute drive from downtown. The room was clean and spacious with a comfortable bed and plenty of outlets (which always matters). The staff were helpful, and parking was easy. It was a solid home base for our 36 hours in Naperville—quiet, convenient, and just far enough from the bustle.
