I love visiting the unknown every once in a while. That’s why, when I first laid eyes on Wat Chalermprakiat, also known as the sky temple, I knew deep in my heart that I had to experience its beauty firsthand. Nestled amidst the craggy limestone peaks of Lampang, this remarkable destination is one of Thailand’s most unique and awe-inspiring temples, offering an experience like no other.

An Adventure Off the Beaten Path: My Journey to the Majestic Wat Chalermprakiat
Our driver, Wat, picked us up at our hotel in Chiang Mai at 8 a.m. We embarked on a journey southeast, passing through the scenic countryside towards Lampang.
From Lampang, we followed signs towards Wat Chalermprakiat, driving approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) further southeast.
Wat parked in the parking area at the base of the mountain where the temple is located. We could take a pickup truck or hike the steep stairs to reach the temple.

After purchasing a ticket at the base of the mountain, including a roundtrip ride on a pickup truck that navigates a steep, bumpy road, holding on tight, I felt the excitement of a roller coaster ride mingled with anticipation for what lay ahead.
We shared a pickup truck up the rocky road to the base of the stairs. From there, it took about an hour to hike the rest of the way to the temple summit. Tucked away in the mountains, Wat Chalermprakiat is not your average temple visit.
The Climb
Arriving at the foot of the temple, I was greeted by a series of well-made stairs. Over the next 30-40 minutes, I climbed higher, each step bringing me closer to the heavens.
Visitors must climb the steep, well-made stairs that wind up the mountainside to reach the temple. The climb, though challenging, adds to the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit.
Unveiling the Wonders of Wat Chalermprakiat’ History

As I explored the temple grounds, I discovered a sense of tranquility and awe-inspiring beauty. Surrounded by the natural wonders of Lampang, Wat Chalermprakiat seamlessly blended with its surroundings, creating a harmonious union between human craftsmanship and the power of nature.

You are immediately rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and the sight of gleaming white and gold stupas precariously perched on the mountain peaks.

Wind Chimes in the Breeze
As a gentle breeze passes through, a wind chime comes to life, its melodious song filling the air. As a result, ach delicate metal piece suspended from the chime’s frame sways and dances with grace, responding to the caress of the wind. The metallic tones harmonize, creating a symphony of soothing sounds that ripple through the surroundings.
A Soothing Quiet
Wat Chalermprakiat attracts intrepid travelers. There were fewer crowds. Consequently, allowing me to truly appreciate the serene atmosphere and the temple’s intricate details. As a result, I had the chance to immerse myself in Thailand’s spiritual essence.
The Return Trip to Chiang Mai
To make the most of our journey south, we subsequently extended the trip beyond Wat Chalermprakiat. Meanwhile, our driver took the scenic route back through Chiang Rai. We stopped to indulge in a delicious lunch and soothe my weary feet in the rejuvenating hot springs.
We ultimately completed our adventure with a visit to Doi Suthep at sunset. The sky was ablaze with vibrant colors, thus bidding farewell to a day filled with remarkable experiences.
