I confidently tried to order a simple snack, pointing at a sign and practicing my best Korean. The vendor smiled, nodded, and handed me a bag of something completely different—and far spicier—than I’d expected. I learned the hard way that a little language mix-up can turn a snack into a fiery challenge. Note to self: pointing and smiling only get you so far.

Bartering at Seomun Market was an entirely new experience for me. Used to fixed prices, I found myself nervously offering a lower price for a small plaid cart on wheels. The satisfaction of securing a deal, even a small one, was something I hadn’t expected. Feeling confident, I later scored a pair of ‘designer’ sunglasses at a fraction of the price. But my victory was short-lived when one lens popped out when I got home. The market may be full of treasures, but sometimes you get what you pay for.

Hanboks: A Delightful Shopping Experience

Of everything I encountered at Seomun Market, shopping for a hanbok was the most delightful experience. Despite the language barrier, the shop ladies were very attentive, matching fabrics to my skin tone. They even tried to convince my husband, Steven, to get a matching suit. It felt special, like I might have been the first little Black girl they had ever measured. I left excited to see the finished product, hoping it would be the hanbok of my dreams, not a Frankenstein creation.

Summary: Market Maven in the Making?

Will I swap my supermarket loyalty for regular trips to Seomun Market? Probably not. The chaos, crowds, and unpredictability are miles away from the order of online shopping. But once in a while, when I’m feeling adventurous, I might find myself wandering those narrow aisles again—maybe with a parasol, trying not to look like an ajumma.

Seomun Market, located at 45, Keunjang-ro 26-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu 41926, is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Saturday, and is closed on Sundays. It’s just a 4-minute walk from Seomun Market Station (exit 3), making it easily accessible for anyone eager to explore this vibrant market. The market is also closed on holidays, the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of every month, and the night market is closed on Tuesdays.
